Univision Communications Inc. [1] announced it is realigning news and entertainment with a new management structure, organizing its news operations on a company-wide basis and coordinating more closely the current and future entertainment programming for the Univision Network.
Univision now holds the number one rating across all stations -- English and Spanish -- in several big markets, such as Los Angeles, New York and Miami. But to stay ahead, the Spanish-language network faces several challenges, including generating more of its own original programming. About 40 percent of the network’s programming, especially its popular telenovelas comes from outside sources, principally Mexican giant Televisa [2]. But its highly advantageous programming agreement with Televisa runs out in 2017.
“They don't want to risk what Televisa is going to do in 2017. It's hanging over their heads,” said Veronica Villafañe, author of Media Moves [3], a Hispanic media blog.
